M42 and NGC 1977 Orion Nebula and Running Man
The bright emission nebula M42 is ~1300 ly distant and harbors extremely active star formation. A very young open cluster, the trapezium, occupies the core region central to this stellar nursery. Emission is dominated by hydrogen-α (red) and oxygen III (blue). NGC1977, the Running Man, is a separate reflection nebula illuminated by the characteristic blue glow of hot young stars.
